Pressure, Shear, Deformation, Oh My!

Date: June 9, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM PDT
Location: Online
Vendor: Sunrise Medical
Presenter: Daniella Giles, Clinical Education Manager for Ride Designs
Description:

Dig deeper than pressure mapping to understand how seating surfaces influence pressure injuries.
Assistive technology providers are asked to provide the appropriate level of skin protection cushions to every rider, and at the lowest cost possible. When considering immersion and envelopment principals, historical evidence is concentrated on reducing peak pressures under the high-risk areas and blood flow occlusion. Dispersion Index (DI) is a validated measure that correlates pressure mapping findings to risk of pressure injury (PI) development. However, we continue to overserve individuals that have a satisfactory DI and still experience PI’s.  Results of finite element analysis studies indicating restricted blood flow to muscle tissue are insufficient to explain PI’s in individuals with long-standing muscle atrophy. Recent research demonstrating how deep tissues respond to various sitting surfaces shed new light on potential biomechanical risk factors associated with PI development.  This lecture will explore the 3 most common types of research conducted by cushion manufacturers when developing new products. Later discussion will outline results of human subject testing relative to DI, tissue deformation and positive treatment outcomes utilizing orthotic and prosthetic principals.

Pediatrics: Don’t Overthink It, Re-Think It For Independent Mobility

Date: June 17, 2026
Time: 9:00 – 10:00 AM PDT
Location: Online
Vendor: Motion Composites
Description:
Pediatrics! That one word can bring anxiety and apprehension when preparing for a seating and mobility evaluation. Pediatric clients should not be treated as “little adults”. They have their unique mobility, positioning, and social needs. This course will examine growth patterns and the best ways to “build growth” into the mobility device. Ensuring optimum configuration, we will discuss propulsion training as an essential part of pediatrics’ prescription process.

Dynamic Seating: Providing Movement for Clinical Benefit! (60 minutes)

Date: August 26, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM PDT
Location: Online
Vendor: Motion Composites
Presenters: Michelle Lange, OTR, ABDA, ATP/SMS

Most wheelchairs and seating systems are static. If the client moves, they will move out of alignment with the seating system and wheelchair frame. Dynamic Seating moves with the client, providing support during movement to maintain the client’s position and provide stability for function. Dynamic components absorb and diffuse force, protecting the wheelchair user from injury and reducing damage to the seating system and wheelchair. Movement also provides sensory input which many clients seek out. Finally, dynamic seating components may improve postural control, stability, and function. Dynamic Seating product features and compatibility with Motion Composites wheelchairs as well as RAZ shower chairs will be addressed.
